President

Whether you are a prospective student, a current student, an Alumnus, a member of the Athenian community, or just a visitor, this brochure (site) provides important information about the activities and programs at our university. The faculty and I think of The American University of Athens as a partnership between students and faculty a partnership in discovery and learning.

The American University of Athens offers a full range of academic programs, and undergraduate degrees, emphasizing its mission as a career oriented institution that is nationally accredited in the U.S.A. We pride ourselves on the quality of our faculty and our students and the spirit of our commitment to students. We are committed to ensuring the highest quality of instruction and scholarship, and to enhancing the tradition of an American university’s general education elective courses in a matrix of courses such as Archaeology, Art History, History, Culture, English Literature and Writing, Humanities and Science/Social Sciences.

We feel that this understanding is captured through a well-balanced, carefully articulated curriculum.
We seek to make excellence the first criterion of our endeavors.
We seek to foster a culture of intellectual inquiry and professional/career advancement.
We seek to enhance faculty teaching productivity combined with career oriented outcomes for each course.
We seek to raise the visibility of our programs so as to attract and retain the best students.
We seek to improve the teaching and learning environment necessary for programs to achieve their missions.
We seek to develop programs that will attract and secure the best of students.
Our university puts excellence in scholarship and teaching at the top of its priorities. The American University of Athens, does so by selectively strengthening the best in each of our principal areas of endeavor. We feel sure that we can assist our students in achieving their goals and ultimately enhance the human condition of fulfilling the legacy of a nationally accredited American University, outside the United States.
Athens, the ancient capital of Europe, is an exciting place at an exciting time. We are going through a major matrix of changes that will serve us well in the millennium. We are working to reaffirm our traditional commitment to small classes and individual attention, while also moving ahead developing new curricula initiatives and responding to the fast-paced world of information technology. Blending the ancient with the modern, recognizing our city’s cultural strengths while creating new ones, is part of what makes our University such a quality institution.

Signed

Achilles Constantine Kanellopoulos PH.D.
