How AUA is a recognized university in Greece and the European Union and in matters dealing with article 16 of the Greek Constitution.

According to EEC Act 2005/36, Articles 3, 11, 12 and 13, * Equal Treatment of Qualifications, AUA graduates may become members of the respective institution or societies in Britain, according to their concentration.

For Example: An AUA law graduate after four years of study and two years of qualifying employment in Greece or elsewhere, may become a legal executive and advocate and then a member of the Greek (Athens) Bar Association (ΔΙΚΗΓΟΡΟΣ).  An AUA civil engineering graduate after five years of study and two years of monitored practice may become a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Chartered Engineers and then Διπλωματουχος Μηχανικος at the Technical Chamber of Greece TEE.

The professional recognition of the qualifications of AUA graduates, therefore, is identical to the academic (Equal Treatment of Qualifications) recognition of the Greek Government or State-owned universities and Polytechnia (Engineering universities of Greece).  AUA offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees according to its charter in the U.S.A. since 1991 and does not require other authorization or approval by the government of Greece.

All matters dealing with article 16 of the Greek constitution are related to the degree granting authority of the Greek Government for institutions which operate in Greece as government-owned (State-owned) institutions as well as the non-governmental ones which may be chartered in Greece under a future Greek law.

As of October 2007, EEC Act 2005/36, the Equal Treatment of Qualifications for four or five years or two or three years of postsecondary education identifies The American University of Athens qualifications as identical to those of Greek universities.
